4 “Thus says the Lord of hosts:
‘Old men and old women shall again sit
In the streets of Jerusalem,
Each one with his staff in his hand
Because of great age.
5 The streets of the city
Shall be full of boys and girls
Playing in its streets.’
Zechariah 8:4
In the Enduring Word commentary, it is mentioned ,that in Zechariah’s time people did not feel safe.
The concept of the elderly sitting outside in the streets and the children freely playing paints a picture of peace, safety, and joy.
There will come a day when Jesus reigns and the fear of danger will be gone.
How often today do the people in Israel hear the sirens go off indicating incoming rockets and they run to their safe places?
Yet, the picture we see of a time to come when there won’t be fear but the elderly and the children (the most vulnerable of society) will feel free and safe.
Many are fighting even in our society for the safety of the vulnerable. We have to do what we can while we can to protect them, but also know there will come a day when Jesus reigns and the children will play and the elderly will sit outside without fear of evil.
